Beijing Jiaotong University

Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), located at Xizhimenwai of Beijing, is a national key university of China, directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. Her predecessor is Beijing Railway Management Training Institute and Beijing School of Posts and Telecommunications, set up by Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of Qing Dynasty. In 1921, the school merged with two industrial technical schools in Shanghai and Tangshanto form the National Jiaotong University, with three branch universities in Beijing, Shanghai and Tangshan respectively. BJTU was then called as Beijing Campus of National Jiaotong University. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in October 1st 1949, BJTU was re-named as Northern Jiaotong University (NJTU) by the State Council. Chairman Mao Zedong appointed Academician Mao Yisheng, a nationally renowned expert in bridge engineering, as the first president of NJTU. In 1951, Chairman Mao Zedong autographed the name of the university. 1981, BJTU became one of the first key universities authorized by the central government to confer master’s and doctoral degrees, and subsequently to confer titles of associate professors, professors and Ph.D. advisors. In July 1994, BJTU was selected as one of the first universities in the National 211 Project. In April 2000, Beijing Electrical Power College was merged into NJTU. Then the university was transferred from the Ministry of Railways to the Ministry of Education. In September 2003, the university restored the name Beijing Jiaotong University.

Over the past hundred years, after arduous efforts and struggles of generations, BJTU has developed into a multidisciplinary key university, featuring Engineering, Management, Economics, Science and Humanities. Meanwhile, our university is a key base for training talents tackling vital problems concerning technologies and policies in reforming and modernizing railway. For the past several years, more progress has been made in our university. The campus is taking on an ever-changing new look, the education quality and level of scientific research are improving steadily, academic exchanges are more frequent and in all, the comprehensive ability of the university is on a constant rise.

BJTU campus covers an area of 640 thousand square meters, while dormitories covering another 560 thousand square meters. Today, besides Graduate School and School of Continuing Education, we have other nine schools which are School of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Computer and Information Technology, School of Economics and Management, School of Traffic and Transportation, School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, School of Mechanical and Dynamical Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Electrical Power Studies, School of Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and what’s more, there are three schools of vocational education and two on-the-job training centers for managerial personnel and technicians. We have 5 state key disciplines (including Communications and Information System, Signals and Information Processing, Traffic Information Engineering and Control, Traffic and Transportation Programming and Management and Discipline of Industrial Economies). Besides, there are still 11 ministerial key disciplines, 71 graduate programs, 28 doctoral programs and 8 post-Doctoral scientific research stations namely, are Information and Communication Engineering, Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Industrial Economies, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanics. 5 disciplines are granted to establish the positions of Changjiang Scholars. The university has currently 22 research institutes and centers and 39 laboratories in a variety of academic fields. Its Traffic and Transportation Simulation Laboratory and Transportation Automaton Laboratory are among the best and largest in China. Our fixed assets including equipment for teaching and scientific research cost over 1 billion Yuan in all. Our modernized library has a collection of over one million books and 3,000 kinds of periodicals both home and abroad. Many other materials have been digitalized and are accessible through computer network. The university’s computer network is part of the CERNET (China Education and Research Network), which is a broadband computer network connecting China ’s top-level higher educational and research institutions. Through the CERNET, BJTU faculty and students have easy access to the information resources on the Internet.

The university has about 2700 faculty and staff members. The faculty is joined by 8 academicians from CAS and CAE, 212 full professors and 502 associate professors. There are nearly 19,000 full-time students, including about 14,000 undergraduate students, 5,000 graduate students and 150 overseas students. Besides, there are also more than 8,000 part-time and correspondence students. To educate people through teaching, to rejuvenate the country through science and education is our task. With the main theme of “improving the teaching quality and to train the first-rate talents”, we seek after a set of educational models and methods fit for our university to assure the sustained and steady enhancement of teaching quality.
